The championship leader wastes no time setting the pace.

Daniel Sanders opened the 2026 Rally of Morocco with victory in the motorcycle prologue, immediately reinforcing his position at the top of the World Rally-Raid Championship. The Australian completed the 16.7 kilometer timed section around Agadir in 10 minutes and 58 seconds. His advantage was small but significant, with KTM teammate Edgar Canet finishing 12 seconds behind. Ricky Brabec placed third for Honda, only one second further back.
The result gives Sanders the first overall lead of the rally and an important strategic advantage before the longer stages begin. In the motorcycle category, unlike cars and trucks, prologue times count toward the general classification. The fastest riders also gain priority when choosing their starting positions for the following stage, making the opening sprint more consequential than its short distance might suggest.
Canet came close to taking the victory despite suffering a minor fall near the beginning of the course. The young Spaniard recovered quickly and maintained enough pace to secure second place, confirming again that he can compete directly with the most established RallyGP riders. His performance also gave KTM two riders at the front of the classification.
The championship context makes Sanders’ victory especially important. He arrived in Morocco leading Tosha Schareina by only three points, with Luciano Benavides also within six points of the top. Schareina finished the prologue 32 seconds behind Sanders, while Benavides placed fourth at 25 seconds. The differences remain small in the context of a multi-day rally, but every second matters when the title fight is this compressed.
Morocco represents the penultimate round of the 2026 World Rally-Raid Championship and will take the competitors from Agadir toward Zagora through nearly 1,600 kilometers of timed terrain. Sand, dunes, rocky sections and complex navigation will rapidly make the short opening prologue seem insignificant compared with what follows. Yet momentum in rally raid often begins with precisely these small margins.
Sanders has taken the first advantage. The harder question is whether he can preserve it once the desert begins demanding more than pure speed.
