Minimal equipment meets maximum intensity before filming begins.

Chris Hemsworth transformed part of his family vacation in Costa Rica into a demanding preparation session for Extraction 3, the next installment in the action franchise led by his mercenary character Tyler Rake. The Australian actor completed a full-body workout under intense tropical heat, demonstrating how he maintains strength, stability and mobility even without access to a conventional gym.
The session combined a kettlebell, resistance bands and bodyweight movements inside the property where he was staying with his family. Hemsworth explained that he was taking a brief break before returning to work on the film, but he continued preparing physically for the demanding action sequences ahead.
Instead of suspending his training while travelling, he adapted the available space and equipment to create a compact routine capable of challenging several muscle groups. The temperature and humidity added another layer of difficulty because the body had to regulate heat while maintaining muscular control and cardiovascular effort.

The workout was organized into two complete rounds separated by approximately two minutes of recovery. Its exercises targeted the core, shoulders, back and the muscles responsible for controlling rotation. The routine emphasized coordinated strength rather than maximum weight.
One of the movements combined the dead bug position with a cross-body punching action. Performed while lying on the back, it required Hemsworth to stabilize his torso while extending opposing limbs and preventing excessive movement through the lower spine.
This type of control is particularly useful for an action performer who must generate force while running, fighting or changing direction rapidly. Strong abdominal muscles help transfer energy between the upper and lower body while protecting posture during explosive movement.
A kettlebell jackknife introduced a more dynamic abdominal challenge. The movement required coordination between the arms, legs and trunk as the weight travelled toward the lower body. Its effectiveness depended on maintaining control rather than relying entirely on momentum.
Hemsworth also performed a half-kneeling kettlebell press. Pressing from a kneeling position reduces the ability to compensate with the legs and forces the core to stabilize the pelvis and spine throughout the exercise.
The unilateral load challenged the body to resist leaning or rotating as the kettlebell moved overhead. This form of controlled instability can strengthen the muscles that help preserve balance during unpredictable physical activity.
Resistance-band rows were included to reinforce the upper back and improve shoulder control. Hemsworth worked one arm at a time, requiring his torso to remain stable while the pulling arm moved against resistance.
Strong back muscles are essential for the physical demands associated with Tyler Rake. The character’s action sequences involve climbing, carrying, grappling and repeated exposure to high-impact choreography.

Another movement combined anti-rotation training with controlled motion around the shoulders. Hemsworth had to resist the pull of the band while guiding his hands through a circular path, forcing the body to preserve alignment under external tension.
The workout demonstrated that physical difficulty does not depend exclusively on heavy equipment. A moderate weight becomes more demanding when the athlete works one side independently, reduces stability or slows the movement to eliminate momentum.
Resistance bands can also maintain continuous tension throughout an exercise. Their portability makes them useful for actors and athletes who need to continue training while travelling or working away from their usual facilities.
Costa Rica’s climate added important physiological demands. Heat forces the cardiovascular system to work harder because the body must redirect blood toward the skin to regulate temperature.
Sweating also increases fluid and electrolyte loss. Training under these conditions requires hydration, controlled intensity and close attention to warning signs such as dizziness, unusual fatigue or disorientation.

Hemsworth’s routine should not be interpreted as a universal programme for every viewer. His physical condition reflects years of specialized training, professional supervision and experience preparing for demanding film roles.
People attempting similar exercises would need to adjust the resistance, repetitions and recovery periods according to their own capacity. Correct technique remains more important than reproducing the exact intensity of a professional actor.
Hemsworth travelled to Costa Rica with his wife, Elsa Pataky, and their family. The visit included time around the beaches of the Nicoya Peninsula, where the actor also surfed and interacted with admirers.
The trip combined recreation, family time and continued preparation for his return to one of his most physically demanding roles. The peaceful tropical environment contrasted with the intensity of the training required for the franchise.
Extraction 3 will bring Hemsworth back as Tyler Rake, with Sam Hargrave returning as director. The series has built its identity around extended action sequences, close-quarters combat and choreography designed to create the impression of uninterrupted movement.
Preparing for that style of filmmaking requires more than visible muscle. An actor must repeatedly perform technically complex movements, reproduce them across multiple takes and maintain precision around cameras, stunt performers and special-effects equipment.
Strength must therefore coexist with coordination, endurance, joint stability and recovery capacity. Hemsworth’s routine reflected those requirements through exercises designed to improve force transfer and control rather than simply increase muscle size.
The session did not resemble a conventional bodybuilding workout organized around isolated muscles. It prioritized movement patterns that allow the body to remain stable while generating force in several directions.
A vacation may provide emotional and physical recovery, but it does not necessarily interrupt the gradual preparation required for months of filming. Hemsworth adapted the environment instead of waiting for perfect conditions.
His workout under the Costa Rican sun offered a clear demonstration of disciplined simplicity. A kettlebell, resistance bands and deliberate movement were enough to produce a demanding full-body session.
The real intensity came not from the size of the gym, but from the precision and consistency applied to every exercise.
