The new recording mode can transcribe meetings, conversations and voice notes, but it must be activated by the user and raises important questions about consent, data retention and access to sensitive information.

ChatGPT’s macOS application now includes a recording function capable of capturing audio, producing live transcripts and transforming conversations into organized summaries. Despite claims that the system “records everything” a person does on a Mac, the feature is not designed as a permanently active surveillance tool.
Called ChatGPT Record, the function must be deliberately started by clicking the Record button inside the desktop application. The user can pause, resume, stop or delete the recording before sending its transcript and generated notes to ChatGPT.
The feature is intended primarily for meetings, interviews, brainstorming sessions and personal voice notes. It can recognize multiple speakers, although unidentified participants may initially appear under generic labels that can later be edited.

After a session ends, ChatGPT processes the transcript and creates structured notes. These can be converted into emails, project plans, summaries, task lists or even preliminary code, depending on the conversation’s content.
Generated notes may appear as a canvas within the chat or remain attached to the corresponding recording. If Reference Record History is enabled, ChatGPT can consult previous transcripts and notes to answer questions about earlier meetings or decisions.
The function currently operates only through the ChatGPT desktop application for macOS and is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education workspaces. Individual recording sessions are limited to four hours.

To capture voices and sounds from a meeting, the application may require access to the Mac’s microphone and system audio. macOS groups some of these permissions under Screen & System Audio Recording, but granting that permission does not mean ChatGPT automatically documents every activity performed on the computer. Recording begins only when the function is activated.
Privacy management remains essential. OpenAI states that raw audio is used for transcription and automatically deleted afterward. Transcripts and generated canvases remain subject to the same retention policies as other conversations and are generally removed from the company’s systems within 30 days after the associated chat is deleted, except when legal or security obligations require longer retention.
For individual accounts, transcripts and canvases may be used to improve OpenAI’s models when the Improve the Model for Everyone option is enabled. Users can prevent that use by disabling the setting. Content from Business, Enterprise and Education workspaces is excluded from model training by default.

The ability to preserve conversations also introduces legal and ethical responsibilities. Users recording colleagues, students, clients or interview subjects must obtain the necessary consent and comply with the laws applicable in their jurisdiction. The presence of an AI transcription tool does not eliminate traditional privacy obligations.
ChatGPT Record therefore represents a productivity instrument rather than an invisible log of everything occurring on a Mac. Its usefulness comes from converting spoken exchanges into searchable institutional memory; its risk emerges when that memory is created without transparency, consent or adequate control.
