Hazardous air complicates training before Sunday’s decisive match.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has deteriorated air quality across parts of the Midwestern and northeastern United States. Authorities in several cities have advised residents to remain indoors or wear protective masks, while FIFA monitors conditions ahead of the World Cup final in New Jersey.

Spain trained outdoors in northern New Jersey on Thursday despite air-quality levels considered dangerous. Medical specialists warned that elite athletes inhale significantly greater volumes of air during intense exercise, increasing their exposure to fine particles associated with wildfire smoke.

Experts have recommended moving training sessions into enclosed, air-conditioned facilities capable of providing cleaner air. Wearing N95 masks could reduce exposure outside, although their use would be difficult during high-intensity football exercises.

Argentina remained near Atlanta for its preparations after reaching the final, staying farther south and away from the most affected smoke plume. Organizers continue evaluating conditions before Spain and Argentina compete for the world title on Sunday.
