Her unmistakable rasp defined a generation of power ballads.

FARO, PORTUGAL — July 2026. Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75 after receiving hospital treatment in southern Portugal. Her family and professional team confirmed that she died unexpectedly on July 8 following complications from the illness for which she had been treated. Tyler had undergone emergency intestinal surgery and was later placed in an induced coma.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Tyler emerged internationally during the late 1970s with songs including Lost in France and It’s a Heartache. Her distinctive husky voice became one of the most immediately recognizable sounds in popular music. That vocal identity later powered her transformation into a global rock and pop icon.

Her defining breakthrough arrived with Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983, followed by Holding Out for a Hero the following year. Both songs became enduring cultural landmarks, sustained through films, television, radio and new generations of listeners. Their theatrical intensity helped define the power-ballad era of the 1980s.

Tyler released 18 studio albums during a career spanning more than five decades. She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music. Her final studio album, The Best Is Yet to Come, was released in 2021.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973. Tributes from musicians, actors and fans have highlighted both her extraordinary voice and her warmth away from the stage. Few singers turned vulnerability into musical force as memorably as Bonnie Tyler.

The eclipse has ended, but that voice will remain impossible to forget.“Bonnie Tyler, Voice of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Dies at 75”
