Benjamín Noval has completed one of the most remarkable performances in junior cycling history by winning both the individual time trial and the road race at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montréal. Just two days after claiming the rainbow jersey against the clock, the 17 year old Spaniard attacked decisively in the road race and rode alone to a second world title. The achievement places him among an exceptionally small group of riders capable of dominating two fundamentally different disciplines at the same championships.
The road race covered 134 kilometres on a demanding circuit around Mont Royal, with repeated climbing and more than 2,500 metres of elevation gain. Noval repeatedly tested his rivals before making the decisive move roughly 27 kilometres from the finish. Once clear, he maintained his advantage and crossed the line alone, while France’s Simon Defrance and Sweden’s Elias Wandel completed the podium. His victory confirmed that the time trial title had not been an isolated display of power.
The scale of the achievement becomes clearer through historical comparison. Remco Evenepoel accomplished the same junior world championship double in 2018, winning both the time trial and road race in Innsbruck. Noval has now reproduced that rare combination of speed, endurance, tactical intelligence and recovery capacity. At junior level, those qualities rarely converge so completely within the same rider during a single championship.
His trajectory also carries a strong generational dimension. Noval is the son of former professional cyclist Benjamín Noval, who raced at the highest level and worked for leaders including Alberto Contador during his career. Yet the younger Noval is already building a competitive identity of his own. His performances in Montréal suggest a rider capable not merely of following a cycling lineage, but of redefining it.
The next phase will bring a different level of scrutiny. Noval is expected to join the WorldTour structure of Netcompany Ineos in 2027, where physical development, race management and the transition to elite competition will become decisive. Junior dominance never guarantees professional greatness, and cycling history contains many examples of extraordinary young riders whose trajectories later changed.
For now, however, Montréal belongs to him. Two races, two rainbow jerseys and a place in cycling history before his eighteenth birthday.
