A bar in Beijing is challenging conventional models of artificial intelligence access by offering customers unlimited AI computing alongside an inexpensive drink. AGI Bar, located in the Zhongguancun technology district, allows visitors to connect to its local computing infrastructure and use DeepSeek’s AI models without paying an individual subscription. The concept attracted renewed international attention on September 19, following reports examining how physical establishments are beginning to incorporate AI services into their commercial offerings. The initiative transforms an ordinary hospitality experience into an experiment involving technological accessibility, computing infrastructure and social interaction.
The establishment was founded by independent AI developer Song De in 2025, near Tsinghua University, Peking University and several major technology companies. Its signature drink costs 9.9 yuan, approximately $1.50, and provides customers with access to AI resources while they remain connected to the bar’s network. Visitors can bring their laptops, write software, experiment with models and exchange ideas with other technology enthusiasts. The venue has consequently developed into a meeting place for programmers, researchers, entrepreneurs and investors.
The technological infrastructure distinguishes AGI Bar from a conventional coworking space. Two Nvidia DGX Spark workstations operate locally, providing the computing capacity required to run DeepSeek’s V4 Flash model. Customers can access the service through the establishment’s wireless network and compatible development tools, using tokens that represent units of AI processing. The unlimited-access offer applies to the available service during a visit rather than guaranteeing unrestricted computational capacity under every possible workload.
The business extends its technological approach to internal operations. Song has incorporated AI into inventory management, reservations, utilities and membership administration, reducing certain repetitive administrative tasks. The establishment has also hosted developer seminars, open-source discussions and gatherings involving Chinese AI laboratories. A second location opened in Shanghai in June, reflecting the founder’s interest in expanding the concept.
Commercial sustainability presents a substantial challenge. Running specialized computing equipment involves hardware investment, electricity, cooling and maintenance expenses that traditional hospitality businesses do not ordinarily face. Song acknowledged to Reuters that the establishment was losing money, partly because it distributed considerably more complimentary drinks than it sold. Its popularity therefore demonstrates customer interest without establishing that the model is financially viable.
The initiative raises a broader question about the future distribution of artificial intelligence. Today, many users obtain advanced capabilities through individual subscriptions or cloud-based computing services, while establishments such as AGI Bar experiment with shared access to locally operated models. This approach could provide another way for communities to encounter AI, although scalability, privacy safeguards and operating costs remain unresolved.
The significance of AGI Bar lies beyond its unusual combination of beverages and computing. It illustrates a possible transition in which artificial intelligence becomes part of the infrastructure offered by physical businesses, much as wireless internet became a standard amenity.
The experiment also exposes a fundamental economic tension: making intelligence accessible is one challenge; financing the infrastructure that sustains it is another.
