Authorities reinforce land, sea and air operations as more than one million journeys are expected across Spain.

The Balearic Islands are preparing an extraordinary security and emergency operation ahead of Wednesday’s total solar eclipse, a rare astronomical event expected to attract massive crowds to some of the archipelago’s most sought-after observation points. Military personnel, firefighters, maritime rescue teams and aerial surveillance units will be deployed as authorities seek to manage transportation, wildfire risks and emergency access.
In Mallorca, Spain’s Defense Ministry will deploy a tactical military unit at several locations in the Serra de Tramuntana, one of the areas expected to experience intense visitor pressure. The operation will complement 93 forest firefighters in Mallorca, alongside additional teams in Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Authorities also plan to increase aerial surveillance because weather conditions have elevated the risk of wildfires.
Maritime security is another major component of the operation. Salvamento Marítimo will reinforce its presence with approximately 70 professionals, while demand for boats has surged as residents and visitors seek observation points from the Mediterranean. Reports indicate that practically all available rental vessels have already been booked for the eclipse.
Traffic restrictions will be extensive. Mallorca’s Ma-10 road between Andratx and Pollença will be closed to general traffic between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., with access limited primarily to residents, workers, authorized visitors and public transportation. Authorities will also restrict access to numerous viewpoints, coves and environmentally sensitive natural areas to prevent overcrowding and preserve emergency evacuation routes.
The operation extends far beyond the Balearic Islands. Across Spain, approximately 33,600 National Police and Civil Guard officers are expected to participate in a coordinated security deployment, while traffic authorities will reinforce operations with an additional 2,500 personnel. The Spanish government has also restricted access to 123 high-risk locations because of environmental concerns or evacuation difficulties.
With total journeys associated with the event expected to exceed one million, the eclipse has evolved into much more than an astronomical spectacle. For Spanish authorities, it represents a major exercise in mobility management, environmental protection and public safety as thousands of people prepare to witness one of the century’s most extraordinary celestial events.
