Apple Cuts Vision Pro Team as Spatial Computing Strategy Shifts

At least 60 employees were reportedly dismissed as the company redirects resources toward artificial intelligence and lighter smart glasses.

CUPERTINO, California — Apple has reportedly laid off at least 60 employees connected to its virtual reality operations, including members of the Apple Vision Group. The information originated from sources familiar with the internal restructuring, while Apple has not publicly confirmed the dismissals. The cuts reportedly affected an entire team dedicated to virtual reality development.

The reduction represents only a fraction of a division that once employed more than 2,000 people across hardware, software, applications and product management. Initially created in 2015 as the Technology Development Group, the unit later became the Vision Products Group and operated with considerable independence inside Apple. The latest dismissals therefore appear to be a targeted reorganization rather than the complete dismantling of the company’s spatial-computing program.

Vision Pro has struggled to achieve mass adoption since its launch, largely because of its high price, substantial weight and limited library of specialized content. Despite its advanced displays, eye tracking and immersive interface, the headset remains inaccessible to many consumers. Apple continues developing visionOS and reportedly retains employees working on future versions of the device.

Industry demand is increasingly moving toward lighter smart glasses that integrate cameras, artificial intelligence and voice assistants into a more familiar design. Apple is believed to be reallocating resources toward this category while also prioritizing its AI-powered Siri platform. The layoffs do not mark the end of Apple’s spatial-computing ambitions, but they reveal how quickly even its boldest projects must adapt when technological prestige fails to produce widespread demand.
