George Russell’s crash turned a possible opportunity into another major advantage for the Mercedes championship leader.
Singapore
Kimi Antonelli has strengthened his position at the top of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship after the Singapore sprint, extending his lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell to 89 points.
Antonelli entered the weekend with an 84-point advantage, but the balance shifted further in his favor when Russell crashed out after briefly taking the lead from Max Verstappen. Antonelli finished fourth and collected five points, moving to 325 for the season while Russell remained on 236.
The result was particularly damaging for Russell because the sprint had initially developed in his favor. He passed Verstappen at the start and appeared capable of reducing the championship deficit, but an error under difficult conditions sent his Mercedes into the barriers and ended his race without points.
Verstappen took full advantage, winning the sprint and collecting eight points. The result moved the Red Bull driver to 196 points, placing him fifth in the championship and only one point behind Charles Leclerc.
Lewis Hamilton also gained ground by finishing second in the sprint. The Ferrari driver now sits third in the standings with 221 points, keeping pressure on Russell while remaining well behind Antonelli in the title fight.
Leclerc occupies fourth place with 197 points, followed by Verstappen on 196 and Lando Norris on 189. The compression behind Russell means that while Antonelli continues to build a substantial cushion at the front, the battle for the remaining leading positions remains much tighter.
The constructors’ championship tells a similarly clear story. Mercedes leads with 559 points, ahead of Ferrari on 418, McLaren on 325 and Red Bull on 306. That advantage reflects not only Antonelli’s consistency but also the combined strength Mercedes has shown across much of the season.
For the Spanish drivers, the sprint brought little reward. Fernando Alonso finished 11th and Carlos Sainz 12th, leaving both on seven championship points and outside the scoring positions in Singapore.
The broader significance of the sprint is now unmistakable. Antonelli does not need to dominate every session to keep strengthening his championship position. Each time Russell fails to score while the Italian collects points, the mathematics become more difficult for his teammate.
Singapore has therefore transformed another opportunity for Russell into additional protection for Antonelli.
At this stage of the season, the championship is increasingly being shaped not only by who wins, but by who can no longer afford another zero.
