A Cage Becomes Protest Against Internet Power

The body enters the platform economy

Paris, April 2026. A French artist has locked himself inside a cage for one month to denounce the dominance of major internet companies, turning physical confinement into a critique of digital captivity. The performance is deliberately uncomfortable: it uses the image of the trapped body to expose a system where users appear free while their attention, data and behavior are constantly enclosed.

The gesture belongs to a long tradition of performance art that transforms the artist’s body into a political instrument. Here, the cage is not only a theatrical object. It functions as a metaphor for the invisible architecture of digital dependency: platforms that organize communication, commerce, memory, identity and social validation without appearing as traditional prisons.

The protest points to a central paradox of internet culture. Users enter platforms voluntarily, but the conditions of participation are rarely equal. Algorithms decide visibility, terms of service define limits, monetization rewards dependence and data extraction turns ordinary behavior into corporate value. The cage makes visible what the screen normally hides.

This matters because digital power is no longer peripheral. Internet companies shape public debate, cultural distribution, political communication and personal relationships. Their influence does not need uniforms, police or borders; it operates through design, convenience and habitual use.

By choosing confinement, the artist reverses the logic of the platform. Instead of producing endless content for circulation, he produces a static image that forces attention back onto the structure itself. The spectacle is not escape; it is exposure.

The performance also raises an uncomfortable question for contemporary culture: can art still interrupt systems built to absorb every gesture as content? A protest against platforms can quickly become platform material, shared, liked and monetized by the very ecosystem it criticizes. That contradiction does not weaken the work; it becomes part of its diagnosis.

The cage is therefore not only about one artist or one month. It is about a civilization that has confused connection with freedom. In the digital age, domination often arrives without chains, because the most efficient enclosure is the one users carry in their hands.
