A sword-wielding attacker injured at least three people inside Brinell School in the central Swedish town of Fagersta. Two teenage boys sustained serious injuries and were taken for emergency medical treatment, while another person was also hospitalized. Police arrested a male suspect following a rapid operation involving ambulances, specialist units and a helicopter. Authorities later confirmed that no continuing threat existed for students or the surrounding community.
The attack occurred while classes were underway at the upper-secondary school, which accommodates approximately 400 to 500 students. Police received reports of ongoing deadly violence shortly after midday and immediately secured the building. Swedish media reported that officers shot the suspect in the leg before taking him into custody, although authorities had not initially confirmed that detail. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and have not established a motive.
Several nearby schools and public facilities were placed under lockdown as emergency teams searched the area and established roadblocks. Those restrictions were gradually lifted after police determined that the situation had been contained. Fagersta’s municipal government opened a crisis center in a nearby sports hall to assist students, relatives and employees affected by the violence. The incident occurred shortly after the summer break, intensifying the shock among families beginning a new academic term.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the attack as a serious incident and expressed solidarity with the victims while urging the public to allow investigators to work. Sweden has experienced other attacks on educational institutions, including the deadly Örebro mass shooting and an earlier sword attack at a school in Trollhättan.
