Catalonia Battles Multiple Wildfires as Thousands Face Emergency Confinement

Extreme heat stretches firefighting resources across the region.

BARCELONA, SPAIN — July 2026. Firefighters in Catalonia have stabilized the wildfire in Sentmenat after flames burned approximately 200 hectares and threatened nearby residential areas. Authorities gradually lifted most confinement orders as crews secured the perimeter, although access restrictions remained in the most exposed zones. The operation unfolded under extreme temperatures and exceptionally low humidity. These conditions increased the risk of secondary outbreaks and rapid changes in fire behavior.

A separate blaze in Gavà forced around 6,000 residents of Can Tries i Bruguers and nearby areas of Sant Climent de Llobregat and Viladecans to remain indoors. Emergency alerts instructed the population to close doors and windows while aerial and ground units attacked the advancing flames. The fire reportedly began after several vehicles burned and then spread into surrounding vegetation. Preliminary investigations are examining the possible use of pyrotechnic material.

Firefighters later stabilized the Gavà blaze and authorities lifted the confinement order as the immediate danger diminished. However, simultaneous fires in Navarcles and Pla de Manlleu forced thousands of additional residents to seek protection. The incidents mobilized hundreds of firefighters, approximately 200 emergency vehicles and around 20 aircraft. The concentration of several major outbreaks placed the regional response system under intense pressure.

Catalonia remains under a severe wildfire warning as the heat wave dries vegetation and reduces nighttime recovery conditions. Access to several natural areas has been restricted, while authorities have urged residents to avoid any activity capable of producing sparks or flames. Emergency services warned that even minor negligence could trigger a rapidly expanding fire. Surveillance will continue across the affected areas despite the progress achieved.

The flames are stabilizing, but Catalonia’s emergency is not over.
