Foreign recruits prepare for the realities of frontline combat.
KYIV, UKRAINE — July 2026
French volunteers are undergoing military training with the International Legion operated by Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence. The recruits joined the Revanche Tactical Group to practise weapons handling, assault movements and coordinated operations. Their preparation is intended to reproduce some of the conditions they could face on the battlefield. The exercises also test their physical resistance, discipline and ability to react under pressure.
One volunteer identified by the call sign “Leon” said he travelled to Ukraine to help defend the country’s population. He explained that his decision was influenced by his previous connection to military service. For him, joining the Ukrainian forces was both a personal commitment and a response to the continuing war. His testimony reflects the motivations of foreign citizens who have chosen to participate directly in Ukraine’s defence.
The training includes small-unit tactics, rapid movement and communication between soldiers from different countries. Recruits must learn to operate together despite differences in language, military experience and cultural background. Clear instructions are essential during exercises involving firearms and coordinated manoeuvres. Any misunderstanding could create serious risks during training or combat operations.
An instructor using the call sign “Viking” said basic orders could be communicated directly to the French-speaking recruits. Interpreters are also available when more detailed explanations are required. The volunteers must understand Ukrainian military procedures before they can be considered ready for deployment. Their integration depends on technical preparation, discipline and trust within the unit.
