Tuchel turns to Chalobah hours before a demanding opener against Croatia
DALLAS, UNITED STATES | JUNE 2026. England’s World Cup preparations have suffered a significant last-minute setback after defender Tino Livramento was ruled out of the entire tournament with a calf injury. The Newcastle United full-back sustained the problem during training on Sunday, and subsequent medical examinations confirmed that he would be unable to recover in time to take any part in the competition. His withdrawal came only one day before England’s opening Group L match against Croatia, forcing head coach Thomas Tuchel to make an emergency change to his 26-player squad.
Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah has been selected as Livramento’s replacement. FIFA regulations permit national teams to substitute an injured outfield player until 24 hours before their opening fixture, provided the replacement meets the tournament’s eligibility requirements. Chalobah had been included in England’s preliminary squad, allowing the Football Association to complete the change without breaching competition rules.

The timing, however, means that Chalobah will not be available for the match against Croatia. While England’s squad travels to the Dallas area for the opening fixture, the Chelsea defender is expected to join the national team at its base camp in Kansas City. Tuchel must therefore begin the tournament with one fewer defensive option before integrating the replacement into the group ahead of subsequent matches against Ghana and Panama.
Livramento’s absence represents more than a numerical adjustment. His ability to operate on either side of the defense gave England valuable tactical flexibility. Although primarily recognized as a right-back, he can also perform on the left, advance aggressively in possession and recover quickly during defensive transitions. In a tournament requiring teams to manage different opponents, climates and tactical demands, that versatility could have become particularly useful.
The 23-year-old had been expected to provide cover for Reece James, whose own injury record remains a concern. England also has alternatives such as Djed Spence and Nico O’Reilly, while Ezri Konsa can occupy a wider defensive role if required. Nevertheless, Tuchel has now lost a player capable of adjusting naturally between both full-back positions, reducing the coach’s margin for rotation and in-game adaptation.
The withdrawal completes a difficult season for Livramento. Repeated physical problems restricted him to 17 Premier League appearances for Newcastle during the 2025–2026 campaign. Knee injuries, a hamstring problem and a later thigh issue repeatedly interrupted his continuity. His selection for the World Cup appeared to mark the end of that difficult cycle and offered him the opportunity to make his first appearance at a major international tournament.
Instead, a new injury has ended that ambition before England played its first match. The psychological impact should not be overlooked. Footballers prepare for years to reach a World Cup, and selection provides no guarantee that they will actually enter the competition. Livramento must now return to Newcastle to begin another rehabilitation process while his teammates pursue the title without him.
Chalobah’s arrival offers Tuchel a different defensive profile. The Chelsea player is principally a central defender, but he has experience operating at right-back and within three-man defensive systems. His physical strength, aerial ability and familiarity with multiple structures could become useful during the tournament, particularly against teams with powerful forwards or strong set-piece routines.
Tuchel also knows Chalobah from their time together at Chelsea. The German coach gave the defender his Premier League debut and trusted him during a period in which the London club competed across domestic and European tournaments. That existing relationship may accelerate Chalobah’s adaptation to the national team’s tactical requirements, even though he enters the competition with limited senior international experience.
England’s immediate priority remains Croatia. The fixture carries historical and strategic weight after the Croatian national team eliminated England in the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup. England later defeated Croatia at the European Championship in 2021, but the Balkan side continues to represent a sophisticated and experienced opponent capable of controlling matches through midfield intelligence and technical discipline.
Tuchel’s team enters the tournament with considerable expectations. England completed an impressive qualifying campaign, winning all eight matches without conceding a goal. The squad contains elite players such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, giving the country sufficient quality to be considered among the principal contenders.
Yet major tournaments are often determined by squad balance rather than starting-lineup prestige. Injuries accumulate, suspensions appear and tactical matchups force coaches to use players who may initially seem secondary. Livramento’s withdrawal illustrates how quickly a carefully constructed plan can change. England has not yet played, but its depth is already being tested.
The situation also places additional pressure on James. His attacking quality and experience make him a valuable option, but England must manage his physical condition carefully across a potentially long competition. Asking him to absorb excessive minutes early in the group stage could create further vulnerability. Tuchel may therefore need to distribute responsibilities creatively, particularly if Chalobah requires time to adapt after joining the squad late.
The Football Association acted within the available regulatory window and secured an experienced Premier League replacement. That response limits the damage, but it does not eliminate it. Chalobah offers strength and tactical familiarity, while Livramento offered natural width, speed and bilateral versatility. The substitution preserves defensive depth without reproducing exactly what England has lost.
For Livramento, the injury is a personal tragedy at the most unforgiving moment. For England, it is an early test of resilience and planning. The tournament has not yet begun for Tuchel’s side, but the margin for error has already narrowed.
Great teams are measured not only by their talent, but by how they respond when the plan suddenly breaks.
