United States revokes visas of Palestinian officials ahead of UN General Assembly

by Phoenix 24

A diplomatic rupture looms: Washington pulls visas from Palestinian Authority and PLO officials just before the U.N. gathering, setting off global repercussions.

Washington, August 2025

In a bold and seldom-seen move, the U.S. Department of State has revoked existing visas and denied new ones to officials of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization, effectively barring them from attending the upcoming U.N. General Assembly. The decision comes amid allegations of persistent incitement, noncompliance with U.S. legal obligations, and international legal maneuvers by Palestinian leaders that U.S. officials characterize as lawfare.

Under U.S. law, including the PLO Commitments Compliance Act and broader peace-related provisions, the administration asserts it must hold the PLO and PA accountable for actions it deems incompatible with peace efforts. Beyond the revocation of visas, authorities also suspended a medical aid program that previously allowed injured Palestinian children from Gaza to travel to the United States for treatment, a decision reportedly accelerated by conservative backlash on social platforms.

The measure comes even as diplomatic norms would typically oblige the U.S., as host country of the United Nations, to facilitate delegation access. Representatives assigned to the Palestinian Authority’s mission to the U.N. may still receive waivers under the host-country agreement, though it remains unclear whether individuals such as President Mahmoud Abbas, expected to address the Assembly, are affected.

From the Palestinian perspective, the sudden curtailment of participation ahead of a high-stakes diplomatic forum reflects escalating tensions after months of mounting international support for Palestinian state recognition and growing calls for accountability in the face of enduring conflict.

The decision also carries broader geopolitical implications. In Washington, officials frame the move as a demonstration of firm resolve, while critics warn it may politicize access to global institutions. Allies such as Canada, France, the United Kingdom and Australia have recently signaled intentions to recognize Palestinian statehood in line with U.N. developments, and the restriction complicates those dynamics.

Riyad Mansour, Palestine’s ambassador to the U.N., said he had only just been informed of the decision and is assessing its legal and logistical impact on the delegation. Palestinian officials argue that restricting access to the General Assembly undermines the principle of equal representation within the U.N. system and may erode trust in Washington’s credibility as a mediator.

Regional reactions are likely to be sharp. Several Arab and Muslim-majority states have already voiced concern over what they view as a political maneuver designed to weaken Palestinian visibility in international arenas. In Europe, diplomatic circles are cautious but acknowledge that the move may reinforce the perception of a double standard in how Washington handles obligations under the host-country agreement.

If carried through, the decision could mark a pivotal shift, an assertion that peace-building efforts must precede diplomatic access. Yet it also risks solidifying divisions and deepening Palestinian disenfranchisement, factors that could obstruct rather than facilitate dialogue. In the longer term, this precedent may influence how future U.S. administrations balance domestic political pressures with international legal responsibilities.
