xAI Opens Grok Build for Local Application Development

Developers can now inspect, modify and run the agent.

Elon Musk’s xAI has released the source code for Grok Build, its artificial intelligence coding agent designed to create, analyze and modify software directly from a computer terminal. The tool can now operate locally, reducing dependence on the company’s cloud infrastructure.

The published code includes the agent’s central operating loop, programming tools, terminal interface and extension system. Developers can connect plugins, specialized subagents and external services, while adapting the platform to their own workflows and security requirements.

The release does not make the Grok 4.5 artificial intelligence model itself completely open source. Instead, xAI has opened the software framework that organizes context, interprets model responses, executes commands and manages code changes. Users may connect the system to local inference models through their own configuration.

The decision follows criticism after earlier versions reportedly transferred complete code repositories to cloud storage without sufficiently clear disclosure. Local execution offers greater control over confidential projects, although developers must still review configurations, permissions and any external models they connect.
