The rivalry remains, but confrontation is no longer the only language.

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping concluded the Chinese president’s state visit to the United States with public declarations favoring stability between the world’s two largest economies. After months of tension over trade, artificial intelligence and geopolitical conflicts, both leaders emphasized coexistence despite representing competing political and economic systems. The tone marked a deliberate effort to demonstrate that strategic rivalry does not necessarily require direct confrontation.
Trump and Xi met privately for about 90 minutes, although significant details of their discussions have not yet been released. According to the Chinese government’s account, the talks included the Middle East, Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula, while trade and the governance of artificial intelligence were also central to the broader summit. The White House had not provided a comprehensive account of the private meeting by the close of the visit. That lack of detail leaves open the question of how much substantive progress accompanied the diplomatic symbolism.
The visit nevertheless produced signs of short term stabilization. Washington and Beijing agreed to extend their fragile trade truce for another two months, reducing the immediate risk of renewed tariff escalation. The move does not eliminate the structural disagreements separating the two governments, particularly around advanced technologies, industrial policy, Taiwan and geopolitical influence. It does, however, preserve a mechanism for managing competition without allowing every disagreement to become an economic crisis.
Symbolism played an unusually visible role throughout the visit. Trump hosted Xi at a formal state dinner attended by leading figures from the technology and business sectors, including executives associated with artificial intelligence, semiconductors, electric vehicles and global commerce. The following day, Trump accompanied Xi to the National Archives, where they viewed foundational documents of the United States and historical material connected to relations between the two countries. Both governments used the ceremony to emphasize continuity and mutual recognition despite strategic differences.
Xi described the relationship as one of healthy competition, while Trump said the two countries could maintain different systems without abandoning cooperation. Those formulations do not erase the underlying contest for technological, economic and geopolitical influence. They instead suggest that both governments currently see value in controlling the temperature of that competition.
The larger significance lies in what did not happen. The summit produced neither a dramatic strategic breakthrough nor an open rupture. Washington and Beijing appear to be testing whether rivalry can be institutionalized without becoming permanently destabilizing.
For two powers capable of reshaping the global economy through either cooperation or confrontation, managing disagreement may itself be becoming a strategic achievement.
