Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz Join Forces at US Open

Two generations of champions will share the same court.

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES

Serena Williams will partner Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open mixed doubles tournament after the pair received a wildcard from organizers. The announcement brings together one of the most accomplished players in tennis history and the reigning men’s singles champion in New York. Their participation is competitive rather than ceremonial, placing them directly into a draw featuring several prominent singles players. The mixed doubles event will take place before the principal singles competition begins.

Williams returns to Flushing Meadows for the first time since her emotional farewell in 2022. The 44 year old American resumed competitive tennis after nearly four years away and recently played doubles with her sister Venus at the Cincinnati Open. Although they were eliminated in a close opening match, Serena demonstrated enough movement and competitive intensity to continue her comeback. Her partnership with Alcaraz represents the most prominent appearance of this new stage in her career.

Alcaraz is also returning from an extended absence after a wrist injury kept him away from competition for approximately four months. The Spaniard will use mixed doubles to regain match rhythm before defending his US Open singles title. His athleticism, court coverage and improvisation could complement Williams’s powerful serve, aggressive returns and extensive doubles experience. Managing his physical condition will nevertheless remain essential because he is expected to compete across multiple events.

Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, six US Open singles championships and fourteen major women’s doubles trophies alongside Venus. She also captured the US Open mixed doubles title in 1998 with Max Mirnyi, giving her experience in the format despite rarely playing it during her career. The 2026 draw will include other high profile combinations, including Aryna Sabalenka with Novak Djokovic and Jessica Pegula with Taylor Fritz. Beyond its promotional appeal, the Williams and Alcaraz partnership offers a genuine competitive test between champions separated by more than two decades but united by an instinct for performing on tennis’s largest stages.
