The competition could transform a German manufacturer into a central supplier of America’s next generation of armored vehicles.

American Rheinmetall has delivered the first Lynx XM30 prototype to the US Army, advancing its campaign for a potential contract estimated at more than $45 billion. The program could eventually involve approximately 4,000 infantry fighting vehicles, although neither the final quantity nor the production award has been guaranteed.
Rheinmetall is competing against General Dynamics Land Systems to replace the Army’s aging M2 Bradley fleet. Both companies were selected from an original field of five contractors and received development agreements to complete digital designs and produce vehicles for military testing. Rheinmetall’s current development contract is valued at approximately $764 million.
The company is expected to deliver eight Lynx XM30 prototypes, with the remaining vehicles scheduled to arrive during 2027. The Army will evaluate mobility, protection, firepower, digital architecture and the ability to operate with or without crews in certain missions. A winner could receive the production contract after the testing phase, with initial operational deployment planned later in the decade.
Rheinmetall has expanded its American industrial presence to strengthen its eligibility for major Pentagon orders. Its acquisition of Michigan-based Loc Performance added manufacturing facilities, skilled employees and expertise in military tracks, suspension systems and armored structures. Producing the vehicles in the United States could help the German group satisfy domestic sourcing and national-security requirements.
The XM30 competition carries significance beyond a single weapons platform. A Rheinmetall victory would deepen transatlantic defense-industrial integration at a time when European governments are seeking greater strategic autonomy while simultaneously relying on the United States for security. For Washington, selecting either bidder will involve balancing technological performance, production capacity, cost and control over critical military supply chains.
