Limiting sugar intake during pregnancy and throughout a child’s first two years of life may significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia decades later, according to new scientific research. The findings add to growing evidence that nutrition during the earliest stages of life can have lasting effects on brain development and long-term cognitive health.
Researchers analyzed health data from more than 60,000 individuals, using Britain’s postwar sugar rationing period as a unique opportunity to compare long-term health outcomes. People exposed to lower sugar consumption during the first 1,000 days after conception showed a substantially lower risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease later in life, while also displaying lower rates of anxiety and depression.
Brain imaging revealed additional benefits. Participants who experienced reduced sugar exposure early in life showed healthier brain structures associated with memory and learning, with scans suggesting slower biological brain aging compared with those who consumed greater amounts of sugar during infancy and early childhood.
Scientists believe these long-term effects may result from metabolic programming during a critical stage of brain development, when nutrition plays a decisive role in the formation of neural connections and the regulation of inflammation and energy metabolism. Although the biological mechanisms continue to be investigated, the research reinforces the importance of healthy dietary habits beginning before birth.
Experts caution that the study identifies a strong association rather than direct proof that reducing sugar alone prevents dementia. Genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors also influence cognitive decline throughout life. Nevertheless, the findings strengthen recommendations to limit added sugars during pregnancy and early childhood as part of a broader strategy to promote lifelong neurological health.
