Marvel Studios has officially unveiled the principal cast of its long-awaited X-Men reboot, marking the first complete cinematic incarnation of the mutant team produced directly within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The announcement was made during Disney’s D23 event in Anaheim, California, where Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the film is scheduled to reach theaters on May 5, 2028. The release date remains subject to possible changes as production advances.
Sadie Sink will portray Jean Grey, the powerful telepath whose abilities have historically placed her at the center of some of the franchise’s most consequential stories. Kit Connor will play Scott Summers, better known as Cyclops, the team’s disciplined field leader.
Christopher Abbott has been selected as Professor Charles Xavier, succeeding performers such as Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy. Maya Boyd will portray Storm, while Inde Navarrette will take on the role of Rogue.
Samara Weaving joins the film as Emma Frost, a telepath whose allegiances have shifted repeatedly between adversary, political strategist and member of the X-Men. Adam Driver will play Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mister Sinister, a scientist obsessed with genetics, mutation and the manipulation of human evolution.
The film will be directed by Jake Schreier, who previously worked with Marvel Studios on Thunderbolts*. Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, both associated with the acclaimed series Beef, are developing the screenplay.
Plot details remain under strict secrecy. Marvel has not confirmed which additional mutants will join the team, and characters such as Wolverine, Magneto, Beast, Nightcrawler and Mystique have not yet been announced as part of the reboot’s principal cast.
The project arrives after years of gradual mutant integration into the MCU. Characters and concepts connected to the X-Men have appeared across Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Marvels, Deadpool & Wolverine and other productions.
Sadie Sink’s appearance as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day offered an early connection to the new mutant era. Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for December 2026, will feature several actors from the previous Fox franchise, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer.
Their return is expected to serve as a bridge between Marvel’s cinematic past and the younger cast that will carry the franchise forward. The multiverse allows Marvel to acknowledge earlier versions without requiring the new film to reproduce their continuity.
The reboot also carries substantial expectations. The X-Men are not simply another superhero team: their stories have long used mutation as a metaphor for discrimination, identity, political fear and the struggle between assimilation and resistance.
Marvel’s challenge will be to preserve those themes while introducing the characters to an interconnected universe already populated by the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and multiple generations of heroes. The mutants are finally entering the MCU as a complete team, but their arrival will also test whether the studio can transform a familiar franchise into something culturally urgent again.
