Zurich’s historic track once more became the stage where athletics moved beyond its known limits.

Alison dos Santos and Masai Russell produced two world records within 40 minutes at the Weltklasse Zürich meeting, renewing the Letzigrund Stadium’s reputation as one of athletics’ fastest venues. Their performances highlighted an exceptional Diamond League programme that also delivered national records, world-leading results and several attempts at another global mark.
Dos Santos won the men’s 400-metre hurdles in 45.80 seconds, improving Karsten Warholm’s previous world record of 45.94 set at the Tokyo Olympics. The Brazilian attacked aggressively, made up the stagger on his Norwegian rival before the final bend and continued extending his advantage through the home straight. Warholm finished second in 46.69.
Russell then completed the women’s 100-metre hurdles in 12.09 seconds, cutting three hundredths from Tobi Amusan’s world record. The American Olympic champion had already approached the mark with performances of 12.14 and 12.17 earlier in the season. Amusan finished second in Zurich with a season-best 12.23, while Nadine Visser placed third in 12.34.
A third world record nearly followed in the men’s pole vault. Armand Duplantis cleared 6.25 metres for the victory, while Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis established a national record at 6.20. Both attempted 6.32 metres but were unsuccessful, leaving Duplantis’ indoor mark of 6.31 intact.
Swiss runner Audrey Werro added another defining home performance by winning the women’s 800 metres in 1:53.70. The time established Diamond League, meeting and national records and left her only 0.42 seconds from the long-standing world record. Julien Alfred also defeated Melissa Jefferson-Wooden by five thousandths of a second in the women’s 100 metres, with both athletes officially recording 10.70.
Built in 1925 and reconstructed before the 2008 European football championship, Letzigrund has hosted record-breaking performances by athletes including Sebastian Coe, Haile Gebrselassie, Butch Reynolds and Yelena Isinbayeva. Favorable conditions contribute to its reputation, but the Weltklasse meeting’s elite fields and intensely engaged spectators are equally important. Dos Santos and Russell have now added their names to that history, confirming that some venues do more than host competition: they create the conditions in which sporting limits can be redefined.
