Leclerc Wins Chaotic Silverstone Race After Dramatic Final Collapse

Ferrari triumphs as Antonelli and Verstappen lose everything.

SILVERSTONE | JULY 2026

Charles Leclerc claimed a dramatic victory for Ferrari at the 2026 British Grand Prix after a chaotic conclusion transformed what appeared destined to become a direct battle with Kimi Antonelli. The Monegasque driver controlled the race through changing strategic conditions and crossed the finish line behind the safety car to secure his first victory of the season. George Russell finished second for Mercedes, while Lewis Hamilton completed Ferrari’s successful afternoon by taking third place at his home circuit. The result also represented the 250th Formula 1 victory in Ferrari’s history.

Leclerc started second but immediately placed pole sitter Antonelli under pressure as both Ferrari drivers attacked the Mercedes during the opening lap. Antonelli made a poor start and fell behind Leclerc and Hamilton, allowing the Italian team to control the early phase of the race. Leclerc established a stable rhythm at the front while Hamilton attempted to protect Ferrari’s advantage from the Mercedes and Red Bull cars behind him. The race initially appeared to confirm that Ferrari had finally found the pace required to challenge consistently for victories.

Hamilton’s afternoon became more complicated when officials imposed a five-second penalty for moving before the starting signal. The sanction forced Ferrari to reconsider its strategy and prevented the seven-time world champion from concentrating exclusively on attacking Leclerc or defending against Russell. Hamilton remained competitive despite the penalty and continued fighting near the front as the pit-stop cycle changed the order. His pace ultimately allowed him to preserve a podium position, giving Ferrari two drivers among the first three finishers.

Antonelli recovered after his difficult start and gradually returned to the battle for victory through an alternative strategy. The championship leader extended his stint and used fresher tires to close the gap when Leclerc appeared increasingly vulnerable during the final portion of the race. His Mercedes began approaching rapidly, creating the possibility of an intense confrontation between the 19-year-old Italian and the Ferrari driver. That duel disappeared when Antonelli suffered a technical problem that damaged his chances and pushed him outside the points.

The failure represented a severe blow for Antonelli after a weekend in which he had won the Sprint and secured pole position for the main race. His Mercedes developed a problem around the front-left area that made the car increasingly difficult to control and eliminated the advantage created by his strategy. Antonelli eventually fell to 16th place, recording his second scoreless result in three races. His championship lead survived, but the gap over teammate Russell was reduced to 25 points.

Max Verstappen also appeared capable of influencing the final podium before his race ended abruptly at Stowe. The Red Bull driver lost control and went into the gravel with four laps remaining, triggering the safety car that neutralized the final phase. His accident arrived just as several drivers had prepared for a final attack on fresh tires. Instead of producing a decisive sprint to the finish, the race became trapped behind the safety car while officials attempted to reorganize the field.

Confusion intensified when the safety car appeared ready to return to the pit lane and allow one final racing lap. Drivers prepared for the restart, but officials redeployed the safety car and the Grand Prix ended without the expected confrontation. Leclerc therefore reached the chequered flag without having to defend against Russell, Hamilton or the cars positioned behind them. The anticlimactic ending generated frustration among spectators after a race that had delivered strategy changes, technical failures and intense battles.

For Leclerc, the victory ended a drought that had lasted since the 2024 season and provided Ferrari with its most important result of the current campaign. He managed the tires effectively, maintained control during the strategic transitions and avoided the errors that eliminated several rivals. Although Antonelli’s mechanical problem and Verstappen’s accident removed the strongest late threats, Leclerc had positioned himself perfectly to benefit from both incidents. His performance demonstrated that Ferrari’s improved speed could now be converted into a complete race victory.

Russell’s second-place finish carried major championship significance because Antonelli failed to score. The British driver remained composed during a difficult race and took advantage of every opportunity created by the problems affecting his rivals. His result reduced the internal Mercedes deficit and reopened a championship contest that had appeared increasingly controlled by Antonelli. Ferrari also strengthened its position in the constructors’ standings through the combined points collected by Leclerc and Hamilton.

The Spanish drivers endured a difficult afternoon at Silverstone. Carlos Sainz briefly entered the points-paying positions after recovering from 14th on the grid, but his Williams lost pace and he eventually finished 12th. Fernando Alonso faced problems before the start and completed multiple pit stops during a race in which Aston Martin remained uncompetitive. The two-time world champion was classified in 18th place after another frustrating weekend for the Silverstone-based team.

The British Grand Prix unfolded before approximately 175,000 spectators who witnessed one of the most unpredictable races of the season. Ferrari celebrated a historic milestone, Mercedes lost a probable victory through Antonelli’s technical failure and Red Bull watched Verstappen disappear into the gravel during the decisive final laps. What began as a controlled contest evolved into a sequence of penalties, strategic reversals and mechanical drama. Leclerc emerged from the disorder with a victory capable of reshaping Ferrari’s confidence for the second half of the championship.

Silverstone delivered chaos, heartbreak and Ferrari’s long-awaited return to victory.
