Julia Polastri Lands Stunning Head-Kick Knockout at UFC Shanghai

A perfectly disguised combination produced an immediate finish, although failure at the weigh-in complicated the Brazilian’s breakthrough.

SHANGHAI, CHINA

Brazilian strawweight Júlia Polastri defeated former ONE Championship titleholder Xiong Jingnan with a first-round head-kick knockout at UFC Shanghai. Referee intervention stopped the contest after 3 minutes and 6 seconds when the Chinese fighter was unable to defend herself following the decisive strike.

Polastri controlled the early exchanges and gradually forced Xiong toward the fence. She then used a right-hand attack to occupy her opponent’s guard before immediately delivering a high kick from the same side. The sequence concealed the kick until its final movement, leaving Xiong with insufficient time to block or move away.

The referee stopped the fight immediately, preventing unnecessary follow-up strikes. Polastri later explained that she had prepared mentally to finish the contest and initially moved forward before recognising that further action was unnecessary. Broadcast commentators described the technique as one of the finest kicks seen in a women’s UFC bout, although that remains an assessment rather than an official distinction.

The victory improved Polastri’s professional record to 15 wins and six defeats, with an even 3-3 record inside the UFC. It also allowed her to recover from her previous loss to Talita Alencar. Xiong, who entered the promotion after a successful championship career in ONE, has now lost both of her UFC appearances.

The result was accompanied by a significant regulatory issue. Both fighters exceeded the non-title strawweight limit of 116 pounds. Polastri weighed 118.5 pounds, while Xiong registered 117. The contest consequently proceeded at catchweight, and neither fighter was eligible for a performance bonus despite the quality of the finish.

Polastri’s knockout will strengthen her visibility within the division, but missing weight limits its professional value. Combat sports require athletes to demonstrate both technical excellence and contractual discipline. Her strike supplied an unforgettable highlight; consistently reaching the agreed weight will determine whether that moment becomes the beginning of a sustained rise.
