Television may restore the characters and details that cinema had no time to preserve.

Gary Oldman believes HBO’s new Harry Potter television series could provide audiences with a more satisfying adaptation than the original films. The actor, who portrayed Sirius Black, argues that the extended format will allow the production to explore storylines and character development removed from the cinematic versions.
Oldman explained that the filmmakers were required to compress increasingly complex novels into movies lasting approximately three hours. Although the eight-film saga became a global phenomenon, significant portions of the books were sacrificed to maintain a manageable running time.
The television adaptation is expected to dedicate one season to each of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels. That structure could restore secondary characters, relationships and narrative details valued by readers, including the Hogwarts poltergeist Peeves, who was excluded from the completed films.
Oldman emphasized that his assessment should not be interpreted as criticism of the original production. He remains grateful for his participation and praised director Chris Columbus for establishing the visual world of Hogwarts and assembling a cast capable of growing with the franchise.
The new series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Oldman does not expect to return as Sirius, suggesting that the producers will probably maintain a clear separation between the two adaptations.
Its greater length does not guarantee superior storytelling, but it gives the creative team something the films never possessed: enough time to preserve the emotional and narrative complexity of the books.
Adaptation succeeds when it preserves meaning, not merely events.
