A French-Argentine tourist has been placed in isolation in Galicia after testing positive for hantavirus, prompting Spanish and French health authorities to coordinate epidemiological monitoring and precautionary measures. Officials confirmed that the patient is currently asymptomatic and remains under medical observation while health teams continue evaluating the case.
Laboratory analysis identified the infection as the Andes strain of hantavirus, a rare variant native to South America that is known for its limited ability to spread between people through prolonged, close contact. Although this form of transmission is uncommon, authorities have activated established surveillance protocols and strengthened coordination with public health agencies.
