Marvel’s next war begins with a villain stronger than its heroes.

Marvel Studios has unveiled new footage from “Avengers: Doomsday,” placing Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom at the centre of a multiversal conflict involving the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men. Presented during Disney’s D23 event in Anaheim, the preview depicts Victor von Doom as both an overwhelming physical threat and a man fractured by personal loss. Downey’s return is especially provocative because he spent more than a decade embodying Tony Stark. Marvel is now using its most recognizable heroic face to introduce one of its most dangerous villains.
The footage demonstrates Doom’s power by showing him stop an attack from Thor’s Stormbreaker with apparent ease. He also summons an army of Sentinels and confronts Thor, Magneto, Gambit and Steve Rogers as cities collapse around them. These images suggest that Doom can command advanced technology, mystical forces and weapons traditionally associated with the persecution of mutants. His ability to challenge several of Marvel’s strongest characters explains why heroes from different universes must unite against him.
Yet the trailer presents Doom as more than a conventional conqueror. He appears isolated on a throne near a portrait of a woman holding a child, suggesting that an intimate loss may be driving his campaign for vengeance. Sue Storm appears emotionally devastated by what Victor has become, while Reed Richards confronts him after the destruction of a city. Their familiarity reflects Doom’s historic connection to the Fantastic Four, although the precise nature of their shared past in the film remains undisclosed.
The preview also intensifies speculation surrounding Downey’s casting. Some viewers believe Doom may be a corrupted version of Tony Stark from another universe, while others argue that Marvel is presenting Victor von Doom as an entirely separate character whose resemblance will carry emotional consequences for the Avengers. His masked face and the appearance of different suits have produced further theories about multiple versions of Doom. None of these interpretations has been officially confirmed.
“Doomsday” brings together Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Simu Liu and performers associated with earlier X-Men films. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden are among the returning actors expected to connect Marvel’s previously separated cinematic worlds. Evans reappears as Steve Rogers after his apparent conclusion in “Avengers: Endgame,” with the trailer showing him in different forms that may reflect alternate timelines or stages of his life. The Russo brothers return to direct after previously leading “Infinity War” and “Endgame.”
The film is scheduled to reach theatres on December 18, 2026, before “Avengers: Secret Wars” continues the story in December 2027. Marvel’s challenge is not simply to assemble its largest cast, but to give that convergence emotional and narrative coherence. By constructing Doom through power, grief and familiarity, the new footage suggests that the threat will be personal as well as cosmic. The greatest danger may not be that Doom can defeat the heroes, but that he understands exactly what each of them has already lost.
