Her sudden death follows a remarkable international competitive breakthrough.

SANTIAGO

Chilean professional bodybuilder Marianne von Gierke has died at the age of 40, just weeks after competing at the prestigious Mr. Olympia championship in Las Vegas. Her unexpected death has prompted tributes across the international bodybuilding community, where she had established herself as an accomplished athlete in the Women’s Physique division.

Von Gierke died on October 14 in Punta Arenas, southern Chile. The Chilean division of the National Physique Committee and IFBB Professional League confirmed her passing, recognizing her contributions to competitive bodybuilding and her influence on other athletes.

According to Chilean media reports, her husband took her to Clínica RedSalud Magallanes late on October 13 after she experienced a medical emergency. She reportedly arrived without vital signs, and medical personnel were unable to revive her despite resuscitation efforts.

The precise cause of death has not been established. Preliminary reports raised the possibility of sudden death, but medical authorities have not publicly confirmed an underlying condition or definitive explanation.

The distinction is particularly important because von Gierke had recently competed at the highest international level and remained professionally active. Her death should not be attributed to training practices, performance-enhancing substances or any specific medical condition without supporting clinical evidence.

Born in Chile’s Magallanes region, von Gierke combined an international sporting career with her profession as a lawyer. She graduated from the University of Magallanes and later developed a parallel career in fitness coaching and competitive bodybuilding.

Her professional breakthrough came in 2021, when she earned her IFBB Pro League qualification, opening the way to international competitions against established athletes.

She subsequently secured notable victories, including the Vancouver Island Pro in 2024 and the Rising Phoenix Arizona Pro in 2026, both in the Women’s Physique category.

Her achievements also included two appearances at Mr. Olympia, widely regarded as bodybuilding’s most prestigious competitive event. She finished 16th in 2024 and improved to 13th place during the 2026 championship.

That progression reflected years of preparation and growing recognition within a discipline demanding exceptional physical conditioning, technical presentation and sustained competitive commitment.

Beyond competing, von Gierke worked with other athletes, offering guidance on training, preparation and posing. Her activities helped extend her influence beyond individual championship results.

Representatives of Chile’s sporting community, fellow competitors and supporters have expressed condolences, remembering her professional dedication and contribution to women’s bodybuilding.

Her death has also renewed discussion about athlete welfare and the importance of medical evaluation in physically demanding sports. However, broader concerns about competitive health should remain separate from speculation concerning her individual circumstances.

For Chilean bodybuilding, her international achievements demonstrated the capacity of athletes from outside traditional competitive centers to establish themselves on major global stages.

Marianne von Gierke leaves a sporting legacy defined by professional achievement, personal ambition and her contribution to the development of competitive bodybuilding in Chile.
