A secluded Ionian island is discovering how quickly social media can transform obscurity into tourism.

Atokos, a small privately owned island near Ithaca, has become an unexpected tourist destination because of the black pigs roaming its beaches and swimming in the surrounding turquoise waters. Visitors now arrive specifically to bathe beside the animals, photograph them and share the encounters online.
The island has no permanent population and can be reached only by boat. Tour operators make several daily journeys from Ithaca, while similar excursions depart from Lefkada and Kefalonia as demand for the experience grows.
The pigs spend much of their time searching the sand for food before entering the sea to cool themselves. Some swim toward arriving boats after associating them with fruit offered by visitors. Although tourists generally describe the animals as calm, guides advise them to follow instructions and avoid inappropriate physical contact.
Videos posted on Instagram and TikTok have given Atokos the informal name “Piggy Island.” Once largely unknown to international travellers, the island now receives thousands of visitors during the busiest summer months. The origin of its unusual animal population remains uncertain, adding another layer of curiosity to the attraction.
Atokos illustrates how social media can reshape tourism without conventional advertising or major infrastructure. The visibility brings economic opportunities for nearby communities and boat operators, but growing visitor numbers also raise questions about waste, animal welfare and the preservation of a fragile island environment.
Discovery creates wonder, but preservation gives it a future.
