The British hypercar challenges established rivals in endurance racing.

BARCELONA

Aston Martin is preparing to bring its Valkyrie 007 hypercar to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the penultimate round of the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship, following a series of increasingly competitive performances that have strengthened the British manufacturer’s position in international motorsport.

The car, driven by British racers Harry Tincknell and Tom Gamble, has emerged as an important part of Aston Martin’s endurance racing program. The team has consistently scored championship points throughout the season, demonstrating progress against established manufacturers competing in the Hypercar category.

At the recent Six Hours of Fuji in Japan, the Valkyrie 007 briefly led the race after both Aston Martin entries qualified among the six fastest competitors for the first time. The performance marked another step in the development of a program seeking its first World Endurance Championship victory.

The sister Valkyrie 009, driven by Spain’s Alex Riberas and Denmark’s Marco Sørensen, also challenged for a podium position before a late safety car affected the competitive order.

Barcelona now provides a new opportunity to evaluate the car’s development. The Spanish circuit makes its debut on the World Endurance Championship calendar, introducing a combination of aerodynamic demands, tire-management challenges and technical corners.

For Riberas, the event carries particular significance as his first home race in the championship. The Spanish driver will compete before a domestic audience while Aston Martin pursues another points-scoring result.

The Valkyrie represents an unusual engineering approach in contemporary endurance racing. Derived from Aston Martin’s extreme road-going hypercar, its competition version uses a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine developed with Cosworth, rather than the hybrid powertrain configurations adopted by several rivals.

The engine’s distinctive architecture provides a connection between the manufacturer’s high-performance road vehicles and its racing ambitions. However, success depends on more than engine performance, requiring aerodynamic efficiency, mechanical reliability and consistent race execution.

Aston Martin is also developing technical upgrades for the Valkyrie program. Planned revisions involve aerodynamic improvements intended to enhance competitiveness under the championship’s regulated development framework.

The manufacturer faces substantial competition from Ferrari, Toyota, Porsche and other established endurance racing participants. These teams possess extensive experience in balancing outright performance with the strategic demands of long-distance competition.

Beyond individual race results, the Valkyrie program serves a wider industrial purpose. Competing in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and North America’s IMSA series provides Aston Martin with an international platform to demonstrate engineering capabilities and strengthen its performance-oriented brand identity.

The Barcelona race will offer another measure of whether the progress demonstrated at Fuji can translate into a sustained challenge for leading positions.

Although the Valkyrie has not yet secured a World Endurance Championship victory, its improving performances illustrate the gradual development required to compete at the highest level of endurance motorsport.

For Aston Martin, the immediate objective is converting technical progress into competitive consistency while building the foundations for future victories.
