Alonso Sees Singapore as Aston Martin’s Best Chance to Fight

Marina Bay could temporarily hide the AMR26’s biggest weakness.

Singapore

Fernando Alonso believes the Singapore Grand Prix could provide Aston Martin with one of its strongest opportunities of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Spanish driver arrives at Marina Bay after finishing eighth in Malaysia, his best result of the year, and sees the characteristics of the Singapore street circuit as potentially favorable to the AMR26.

The key factor is the layout. Aston Martin has struggled throughout the season with straight-line speed, an area where the Honda-powered car has repeatedly lost performance against its rivals. Singapore contains fewer long straights and places greater emphasis on mechanical grip, aerodynamic efficiency at lower speeds and precision through a sequence of demanding corners. That combination could reduce the impact of the car’s power deficit.

Alonso has nevertheless avoided presenting the weekend as a guaranteed breakthrough. He has emphasized that Aston Martin’s competitiveness remains highly dependent on circuit characteristics. On tracks that expose its weaknesses, the team can still fall toward the back of the grid. Singapore therefore represents a weekend that must be maximized rather than evidence that the underlying problems have disappeared.

The result in Malaysia has nevertheless changed the atmosphere around the team. Alonso showed competitive race pace on his way to eighth place, giving Aston Martin valuable points after a difficult campaign. Team officials have acknowledged that the performance provided an important psychological boost and strengthened confidence ahead of Singapore.

The format adds another variable. Marina Bay will host its first Formula 1 Sprint weekend, reducing the amount of practice available before competitive sessions begin. With only one conventional free practice session, teams will have less time to refine setups. That could reward drivers capable of adapting rapidly to changing conditions and extracting performance from an imperfect car.

Singapore also carries special significance in Alonso’s career. In 2010, he produced one of his most complete Formula 1 performances at Marina Bay, taking pole position, victory, fastest lap and leading every lap. More than a decade and a half later, the competitive circumstances are very different, but the circuit remains one where driver confidence and precision can have an unusually large influence.

For Aston Martin, the objective is realistic rather than spectacular: capitalize on a circuit that minimizes weaknesses, convert improved momentum into points and determine whether recent progress can be sustained.

A difficult car becomes dangerous when the circuit stops exposing its weaknesses.
