In a major essay on artificial intelligence, he argues that some responsibilities should remain with people even when machines become technically capable of performing them. His concern is not limited to employment: it encompasses dignity, empathy, social stability and the distribution of AI’s economic benefits.
Healthcare provides his clearest example. Gates recalls the caregivers who supported his father during advanced Alzheimer’s disease and describes their work as irreplaceably human. He also argues that a machine should not independently communicate an incurable diagnosis merely because it can process the medical information. In education and mental-health care, his proposed model is mixed: humans would remain in charge while using AI to expand access and improve their capabilities.
