A leadership transition will share the stage with one of Apple’s most consequential product cycles.

Apple’s September product presentation will become its first major launch event in 15 years without Tim Cook serving as chief executive. John Ternus, the company’s longtime hardware engineering leader, will formally succeed Cook on September 1 and is expected to lead the presentation at the Steve Jobs Theater. Cook will remain involved as executive chairman.
The event is scheduled for September 9 and is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Reports also point to Apple’s first foldable smartphone, potentially positioned as its most expensive iPhone. Apple has confirmed the event but has not officially disclosed its product lineup, specifications or commercial names.
A foldable iPhone would represent Ternus’s first defining product announcement as chief executive and Apple’s entry into a category already developed by Samsung and several Chinese manufacturers. Industry reports suggest the device could open into a display comparable with an iPad mini. Those details remain based on supply-chain information and analyst expectations rather than an Apple presentation.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has supervised hardware development across the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods. His appointment signals continuity in product engineering, but he inherits strategic challenges involving artificial intelligence, regulation, supply constraints and pressure to create another major device category.
Cook succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011 and transformed Apple into a considerably larger and more profitable company. Products introduced during his leadership included the Apple Watch, AirPods, Vision Pro and the company’s internally designed Apple Silicon processors. He also expanded services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+ and Apple Pay, reducing Apple’s dependence on hardware sales alone.
The forthcoming event has not yet taken place, making descriptions of products already “announced” premature. Its historical significance is nevertheless established: it will show how Apple presents innovation after Cook while determining whether Ternus begins his tenure with an incremental iPhone update or a device capable of defining a new era.
