A private notification can quietly expand the audience of a public moment.

WhatsApp allows users to mention selected contacts in a Status without displaying their names to everyone who views the publication. The mentioned person receives a private notification, while other viewers cannot see that a tag was added. Up to five contacts can be mentioned in a single Status.
To use the feature, the user opens the Updates section, creates a Status with a photograph, video or other supported content and selects the “@” icon before publishing. WhatsApp then displays the contact list, from which the intended recipients can be chosen. Each mentioned person is notified separately and cannot see who else was tagged.
A private mention also ensures that the selected contact can access the Status, even when that person is not included in the publication’s ordinary audience settings. This exception makes the feature useful for drawing someone’s attention to a specific update. It also means users should select mentions deliberately rather than assuming their existing privacy list will always control access.
Mentioned contacts can reshare the Status with their own audience when sharing is permitted. The redistributed content does not reveal the original creator’s name, telephone number, profile photograph or other profile information. Nevertheless, the image or video itself may contain details capable of identifying its source.
The term “private mention” therefore applies to the identity of the tagged contact, not to the entire Status. The original audience can still see the content according to the creator’s Status privacy settings, and resharing can expose it to additional people. Users should review the options “My contacts,” “My contacts except” and “Only share with” before publishing sensitive material.
WhatsApp’s feature combines discreet tagging with easier circulation, making personal interaction more flexible but also more complex. Privacy depends not only on whether a name appears, but on who can view, reshare, capture or recognize the underlying content.
