American athleticism joins an ambitious EuroLeague reconstruction.

FC Bayern Basketball has signed American forward MarJon Beauchamp for the 2026–27 season, adding a former NBA first-round selection to its redesigned roster under new head coach Anton Gavel. The 25-year-old arrives in Munich with 155 NBA appearances and membership of the Milwaukee Bucks squad that won the 2024 NBA Cup.
Beauchamp will primarily strengthen Bayern at small forward, although his 2.01-metre frame and athleticism could allow Gavel to use him across several positions. His ability to defend on the perimeter, attack open spaces and finish in transition gives the German club a physical profile that can be difficult to acquire within the European market.
The signing comes shortly before Bayern begins preseason training on 21 August. Integrating Beauchamp quickly will be one of the coaching staff’s priorities because European basketball demands tactical precision, constant movement and defensive coordination that differ significantly from the more individualised structures he experienced in North America.
Beauchamp was selected by Milwaukee with the 24th pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. His combination of length, mobility and defensive potential made him an attractive developmental prospect for a Bucks organisation built around Giannis Antetokounmpo. He showed promising moments but was unable to secure a permanent place in a highly competitive rotation.
During the 2023–24 NBA season, he appeared in 48 games for Milwaukee, averaging 4.4 points in approximately 12.7 minutes. He later formed part of the Bucks roster that captured the 2024 NBA Cup, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in the final. The title gave him experience inside a championship environment, although his role remained secondary.
It is important to distinguish the 2024 competition from the inaugural NBA Cup. The Los Angeles Lakers won the first edition in 2023, while Milwaukee became the second champion one year later. Beauchamp therefore arrives in Germany as a member of an NBA Cup-winning roster, but not of the tournament’s inaugural championship team.
His four-year NBA journey also included periods with the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers, along with assignments in the G League. Last season, he made 14 appearances for Philadelphia as a two-way player while also receiving developmental minutes with the Delaware Blue Coats.
That movement reflects the instability faced by many young NBA players who enter the league with considerable physical talent but limited opportunities. First-round status may create an initial pathway, yet it does not guarantee playing time once teams begin balancing immediate results, salary structures and roster development.
Bayern offers Beauchamp something the NBA could not consistently provide: an opportunity to establish a defined role within a major competitive project. Regular minutes in the Basketball Bundesliga and EuroLeague could allow him to develop decision-making, shooting consistency and tactical discipline while remaining visible to clubs on both sides of the Atlantic.
The EuroLeague will represent a demanding transition. Its courts are occupied by experienced players who recognise defensive mistakes immediately and punish poor positioning. Possessions are often slower and more structured than in the NBA, placing greater emphasis on spacing, off-ball movement, screening angles and collective execution.
Gavel believes Beauchamp can contribute at both ends of the court. His size and athletic ability should help Bayern defend multiple positions, while his individual scoring potential offers another option when organised offensive actions break down. The central question will be whether those physical tools can be converted into reliable production against tactically sophisticated opponents.
Beauchamp has indicated that he still considers himself capable of playing in the NBA. His move to Munich should therefore not be interpreted as the abandonment of that objective. European basketball has increasingly become a platform through which former NBA players rebuild their careers, expand their tactical understanding and return to North America with more complete profiles.
Bayern has been active in restructuring its squad around Gavel, whose appointment signals a new sporting phase. The club has also signed guard Duane Washington Jr., another player with NBA experience, on a contract extending through 2028. Washington arrives after developing a greater understanding of European basketball during his period with Partizan Belgrade.
The combination of Beauchamp and Washington introduces speed, one-on-one scoring and American professional experience. Bayern must now integrate those qualities with the discipline of its German core and the demands of a EuroLeague schedule that leaves little time for prolonged adaptation.
Bayern remains Germany’s only representative in the EuroLeague, placing additional pressure on the organisation to compete internationally while pursuing domestic titles. Its football identity provides enormous visibility, but basketball success requires specialised recruitment, roster continuity and sustained investment rather than relying solely on the institutional power of the wider club.
Beauchamp’s arrival also reflects the growing attraction of European basketball for players positioned between the NBA and the G League. A leading EuroLeague team can offer meaningful competition, international exposure and a clearer professional identity than repeated short-term contracts or developmental assignments.
For Bayern, the signing contains both opportunity and risk. Beauchamp’s NBA background creates expectations, but his limited role there means he remains a developing player rather than an established star. The club will need to provide structure without suppressing the athletic instincts that make him distinctive.
If Gavel can translate Beauchamp’s physical potential into consistent two-way performance, Bayern may have acquired a player capable of changing games above the rim and across defensive matchups. If the transition proves difficult, the signing will illustrate how NBA experience alone does not guarantee success in Europe.
Munich is therefore not simply the next destination in Beauchamp’s career. It is the place where he must transform potential into responsibility and sporadic opportunity into sustained impact.
