Pigment Ink Technology Keeps Printed Pages From Smearing

Pigment-based ink technology prevents printed text and images from immediately dissolving or spreading when exposed to water. Unlike dye inks, whose colorants are dissolved in liquid and absorbed deeply into paper, pigment inks contain microscopic solid particles that remain closer to the surface.

These particles are combined with resins or binding agents that attach them to the paper fibers as the ink dries. The resulting layer is more resistant to moisture, rubbing, light and fading, making it especially useful for professional documents, labels, reports and materials that must remain legible over time.

The technology does not make every printed page completely waterproof. Its effectiveness depends on the printer, ink formulation, paper coating, drying time and selected printing settings. Prolonged immersion or heavy friction can still damage the document.

Dye inks may produce brighter photographic colors, but pigment formulations generally offer greater durability. The innovation shows that print resistance depends not only on the paper, but on how the color is chemically anchored to its surface.
