One missed putt closes a four-year run.
NORTH BERWICK, SCOTLAND | JULY 2026
Scottie Scheffler missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, ending one of the most consistent runs in modern professional golf. The world number one completed two rounds at level par after scores of 68 and 72. He finished one stroke outside the line required to advance into the weekend.
Scheffler arrived at the final hole needing par to preserve his tournament and his streak. A missed putt from approximately six feet confirmed his elimination at The Renaissance Club. It was his first missed cut since August 2022, ending a sequence of 78 consecutive tournaments in which he had reached the weekend.
The American acknowledged that his approach play and putting prevented him from creating enough birdie opportunities. Although he remained competitive during parts of both rounds, he could not generate the momentum needed to recover. The narrow margin made the result more striking after nearly four years of sustained consistency.
The early exit disrupts Scheffler’s competitive preparation before the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. He will defend the title he captured in 2025 and now has additional time to study the course and adjust his game. The setback does not remove him from the group of leading contenders, but it changes the rhythm of his preparation.
Scheffler’s elimination also illustrates how quickly golf can interrupt even the strongest patterns of performance. Seventy-eight successful cuts were reduced to a single missed putt and one stroke on the wrong side of the line. His next response will arrive on one of the sport’s most demanding stages.
