Years of rejection culminated in an unexpected literary triumph.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM — July 2026. American author Virginia Evans has received the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction for her debut novel, The Correspondent. The award was announced during a ceremony in London on June 11. Evans described the recognition as an emotional surprise she would never forget.

Told through letters and emails, the novel follows Sybil Van Antwerp, a 73-year-old retired lawyer confronting grief, strained relationships and unresolved memories. The epistolary structure explores how written correspondence can reveal an ordinary life with emotional depth. Judges praised the book for combining originality, accessibility and literary excellence.

The novel reached publication after Evans spent approximately two decades writing and enduring repeated rejection. Seven earlier manuscripts remained unpublished before The Correspondent appeared in 2025. It later spent 19 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and reportedly surpassed one million copies sold.

The judging panel was chaired by former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard. Evans received £30,000 and the bronze statuette known as the Bessie. The award is open to women writing fiction in English, regardless of nationality.

A film adaptation is now in development, with Jane Fonda expected to play the central character. The project extends the remarkable trajectory of a novel that initially grew through recommendations and word of mouth. Evans’ victory has transformed a long period of private perseverance into international literary recognition.

After decades of rejection, one novel finally delivered the letter that changed everything.
