He thought about retirement, broke old loyalties and risked everything just to prove himself: a comeback forged in pain, strategy and resilience.
Cervera, September 2025. Marc Márquez has revisited the darkest chapter of his career and explained how he returned to the top, a journey that began with the devastating injury at Jerez in 2020, the painful recovery attempts of 2021 and the eventual break with Honda, the team that had defined his sporting identity. He admitted that he considered retiring when constant pain and a strange sensation in his arm left him unable to ride naturally. In those days motivation was almost gone and he believed his career might be over.
The turning point came with a question he asked himself repeatedly: was he still competitive? To answer it he had to abandon comfort, history and money, and search for the best machine available. That machine was a Ducati. Encouraged by the example of his brother Alex, already riding a Ducati at Gresini, Márquez decided to take the risk. He signed for a single year, even accepting to ride without the guarantees of a major salary, just to test whether he still belonged at the top level. If he failed, he knew his career would end.
In Gresini he slowly rebuilt confidence. Victories returned, step by step, until he secured the move to the factory Ducati team. There the plan transformed into a championship battle. He prepared the preseason with a clear objective of fighting for the title, but even he admits that the way victories came in 2025 exceeded all predictions. Winning on circuits where he had previously struggled and stringing together dominant performances pushed him into contention for a ninth world crown with six races still to go.
The comeback was not only physical or technical but also psychological. By setting aside relationships and past loyalties, Márquez created space for a new challenge. He risked reputation and legacy but discovered that the will to test himself outweighed the fear of failure. He now insists that trying was already a victory, because to stop without attempting would have left only doubt.
This season confirms that Márquez has not only answered his own question but also reshaped his story. His revival with Ducati shows how calculated risk and resilience can turn crisis into opportunity. What once looked like the end of an era has become the opening of a new chapter, one in which the rider from Cervera is again fighting at the very front of MotoGP.
